IR Working Paper 1993/9
Andrew Mack, ‘Australian Security in the 1990s’, IR Working Paper 1993/9, Canberra: Department of International Relations, Research School of Pacific Studies, Australian National University, December 1993.
This paper examines Australia’s regional security prospects for the 1990s. It describes various trends in the regional security environment and notes their implications for Australian security policy. The long-term shift in the regional quantitative and qualitative military balance is analysed and its implication for Australian security policy assessed. The paper concludes by arguing that the most appropriate long-term policy for Australia is that of ‘cooperative security’.
